Nahanni Butte
  • The Nahanni Butte water treatment system was built in 1995 and consist of 5 subsystems:
    • 2 raw water wells
    • Raw water transmission line to the treatment plant
    • Water treatment
    • Water storage
    • Water distribution
  • The raw water wells were built in 1996 and are 41.5 and 33.5 m.

  • Raw water is pumped into the reservoir via HDPE pipes with a submersible turbine pump.
  • The water treatment subsystem uses dual greensand filters operating in parallel to remove sulphur and manganese.
  • Chlorine and potassium permanganate are used to oxidize iron and manganese to be filtered out.
  • Treated water is stored in a 19,500-litre aboveground HDPE tank
  • Chlorine is added through a flow switch within the lines to prevent bacterial growth within the holding tank.
  • A control panel on the outside of the building allows for the water truck operator to activate the truckfill arm which also has a flow switch activating a chlorine pump to further disinfect the water as it goes into the truck.
  • The community has one 2,900-litre water truck and a 2,200-litre steel tank mounted on a trailer for emergency use.
