Public Works and Services and other government departments work together to provide safe drinking water and effective sewage systems in NWT communities. Our department’s role is to provide technical support:

  • reviewing design of water and sewage projects.
  • inspections and operational reviews of water supply systems.
  • pilot studies for evaluating potential water treatment process upgrades.
  • updating and developing technical standards and guidelines.
  • commissioning water and sewage systems.
  • technical assistance during construction.
  • training of water treatment plant operators.
  • water sampling and testing.
  • reviewing new or improved construction material and equipment.

Staff take part in or give technical advice to a number of committees related to water quality:

  • Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board
  • Regional water and health boards
  • NWT Water Committee
  • Federal/Provincial Subcommittee on Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines
  • NWT Water and Waste Association
