Yellowknife Airport and Behchoko Elementary School Biomass Projects
Client: Departments of Transportation and Education, Culture and Employment
Contractor: J&R Mechanical Ltd
Construction Cost: $1,125,000
In 2010, PWS carried out a feasibility study for biomass heating systems at the Elizabeth Mackenzie Elementary School in Behchoko and the new Combined Services Building, which is located at the Yellowknife Airport. In 2011, approval was received for the installation of wood pellet boiler systems in both buildings.
To date, a 540 kW wood pellet boiler has been installed in the new Combined Services Building at the airport and is being installed at the Elizabeth Mackenzie Elementary School in Behchoko.
Combined, these boilers will displace approximately 335,000 litres of heating fuel oil annually, representing a GHG emissions reduction of 900 tonnes, which is equivalent to removing 180 cars off the road
