Buying "green" goods and services is important to the Government of the NWT. It is a way that the government can take part in promoting a healthy environment. This position is stated in the GNWT's Green Guide.

"Green" products

  • reduce waste
  • improve energy efficiency
  • limit toxic by-products
  • contain recycled content or
  • are reusable.

When you are buying for the government, look for goods that are better for the environment. For example, when you buy paper, check that it includes recycled materials. Look for products that will last a long time or ones that can be re-used. Recycled laser printer cartridges are an example of re-use.

Green procurement can also be applied to larger projects. "Green" construction materials can be used in energy-efficient project designs. When buying vehicles, consider fuel efficiency.
