| The Helen Kalvak School addition
expands the existing facility by adding: |
|
more high school classrooms |
|
a new library and resource centre |
|
a dedicated computer room |
|
a new gymnasium and change rooms |
|
an industrial arts room |
| |
|
| The innovative design of the addition allows
for direct after-hours access to the gym, kitchen, industrial
arts room and the library/resource centre. These can be used
by local community groups for sports activities as well as
for arts and cultural events. The construction of the high
school classrooms has enabled students in the upper grades
to remain in the Hamlet to complete their education, instead
of going to school in Inuvik. The community has been important
in the success of this project. They provided the General
Contractor and their sub-trades with both local labour
and accommodation. The residents of Ulukhaktok have shown
their support, patience, and acceptance of all who have
been involved in this project.
