The female young offender facility in Inuvik
is the first stand-alone facility for girls in Canada. All
other Canadian young offender centres holding girls are
co-correctional. Since historically most young offenders
in custody are boys, programs and operations have focused
primarily on the needs of boys. In contrast, this facility
has been designed to meet the specific needs of girls in
custody.
The facility accommodates up to nineteen
youth in two living units with rooms designed to meet the
needs of young mothers and the handicapped. One unique feature
of this facility is the inclusion of a mothering program.
The mothering program provides, for the young mother who
plans to raise her child, an opportunity to bond in a structured
and supervised setting.
The building uses natural
gas as a heating fuel and includes a solar wall to reduce
fuel consumption.
Before construction began on the building,
the Department of Justice hosted a site blessing ceremony
with participation of community representatives and elders.
