| The North Slave Correctional Facility will
house adult and young offenders in separate buildings connected
to a shared services building by enclosed hallways. |
| |
| In addition to the usual correctional facilities,
the buildings have been designed to support rehabilitation
and traditional healing programs. An Aboriginal Advisors Committee
was established to provide input into the design. |
| |
| Phase 1 includes site preparation, servicing
and construction of the young offenders facility and the shared
services building. Design and construction have been fast-tracked
so that the young offenders unit can open in the summer of
2002. Construction of the adult facility will proceed as Phase
2 with completion scheduled for 2003. |
| |
| The buildings are constructed of cast-in-place
concrete, structural steel, masonry, steel studs and gypsum
board. Local labour and sub-contractors are being used extensively
for the project. As a result of the requirement to fast track
the project, a construction management approach has been taken. |
