The North Slave Correctional Facility will house adult and young offenders in separate buildings connected to a shared services building by enclosed hallways.

In addition to the usual correctional facilities, the buildings have been designed to support rehabilitation and traditional healing programs. An Aboriginal Advisors Committee was established to provide input into the design.

Phase 1 includes site preparation, servicing and construction of the young offenders facility and the shared services building. Design and construction have been fast-tracked so that the young offenders unit can open in the summer of 2002. Construction of the adult facility will proceed as Phase 2 with completion scheduled for 2003.

The buildings are constructed of cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, masonry, steel studs and gypsum board. Local labour and sub-contractors are being used extensively for the project. As a result of the requirement to fast track the project, a construction management approach has been taken.
